About the SFFRWA

Mission Statement

To protect, enhance, and restore the South Fork Flambeau River Watershed for its ecological, recreational, aesthetic, and cultural values for future generations and to increase community support through education

Background

In 2005, a major zoning violation along the South Fork Flambeau River in Fifield, Wisconsin, elicited a call-to-action response from a group of concerned citizens. This fledgling grass-roots movement became the River's voice when the impacts caused by the zoning violation continued unabated. Despite stiff opposition, the group incorporated as the South Fork Flambeau River Watershed Association (SFFRWA) and crafted a mission to aid in the protection, enhancement, and restoration of the River's watershed. The Association's persistence paid off when the shoreline zoning regulations were ultimately enforced and further degradation to the site's sensitive habitat was prevented.

The story didn't stop with the infractions on one site, however. The zoning conflict had the effect of reawakening interest in this lesser known River, its tributaries, and watershed. It became evident to the Association that ongoing monitoring, education, and dialogue were necessary to protect the watershed for future generations. While government agencies have primary responsibility for environmental protection, they lack funding and staff for many of the hands-on support activities. Thus citizens' groups like the SFFRWA play an important role in promoting awareness and assisting with water quality projects.
